Olympic Games 2020
After an epic final Finn medal race, Giles Scott has won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Hungary’s Zsombor Berecz won the medal race to secure the silver while Spain’s Joan Cardona did just enough to hang on to the bronze. Despite one of the most stressful medal races ever, the top three remained the same. But it could have all been so very different…
TOKYO 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES – FINN MEDAL RACE PREVIEW
There was a Finn brochure produced in the 1990s that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the Finn class. One of the enduring maxims from that glossy marketing project was ‘The Journey is the Reward’.
Six sailors will go into the Finn medal race at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Tuesday with a shot at a medal after the final day of the opening series on Sunday. The race wins went to Giles Scott, who led Race 9 from start to finish, while New Zealand’s Josh Junior won the final race after sniffing out a shift on the left and taking the lead on the second upwind.
TOKYO 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES – FINNS DAY 4
Double America’s Cup winner and 2019 Finn World Champion, Josh Junior, from New Zealand, made the best out of the extremely fickle fourth day for Finns at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. While this moves him within reach of the medals for the first time, the top three remain the same. Giles Scott extends his leads to six points, from Spain’s Joan Cardona and Hungary’s Zsombor Berecz.
Giles Scott made it four race wins in a row to move into the overall lead after two more confident victories on Thursday, the third day of the Finn competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Spain’s Joan Cardona also moved up to second, after a 2,3 to leave them with a one point separation going into Friday’s rest day. Zsombor Berecz, from Hungary, drops one place to third after a 6,7 and is now seven points behind Cardona. The fleet returns to Sagami Bay on Saturday.
TOKYO 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES – DAY 2
Giles Scott, the British defending Olympic champion from Britain, won both races on the second day of competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, following a lacklustre performance on the opening day left him in ninth place. The top three overall remain the same, with Turkey’s Alican Kaynar still leading from Hungary’s Zsombor Berecz and Spain’s Joan Cardona.
Turkey’s Alican Kaynar made a perfect start to his third Olympic Games with two bullets on one of the most difficult course areas in Enoshima. Hungary’s Zsombor Berecz picked up two second places while Spain’s Joan Cardona ended with two third places, after leading the final race all the way until the final downwind. With two very different races, it was a difficult start to what will be a long regatta.
On the eve of the start of the first Finn races at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Sailing Competition, everyone is ready. Most have been ready for at least a year, but in the next eight days, many years of hard work will come to a conclusion.
There are always many stories to come out of the Olympic Games, but for the 19 Finn sailors at Enoshima, these are all the more poignant as they contemplate the Finn’s final appearance at the Games and maybe their only or final chance for Olympic glory.
